AGO vs PMS: What's the Difference?

18 September 2026 · 4 min read

Diesel and petrol power most of Nigeria's economy. Here is a clear guide to how they differ and when each is used.

Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) are the two most widely traded petroleum products in Nigeria. Both are refined from crude oil, but they have different properties and uses.

Automotive Gas Oil (AGO)

AGO, commonly called diesel, is a heavier distillate that ignites under compression rather than by spark. It delivers more energy per litre and high torque, which is why it powers trucks, heavy machinery, marine engines and most commercial and industrial generators.

Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)

PMS, or petrol, is a lighter, more volatile fuel designed for spark-ignition engines. It is the standard fuel for private cars, motorcycles, tricycles and small generators.

Key differences at a glance

  • Ignition: AGO uses compression, PMS uses a spark
  • Typical users: AGO for industry and haulage, PMS for retail and light vehicles
  • Handling: PMS is more volatile and needs stricter vapour controls
  • Pricing: each follows its own market dynamics and regulatory framework
